When applying for jobs or programs, one of the most important tools is a resume. It offers a page or two on which we can highlight our top skills and qualities, as well as our background of expertise. Employers typically read resumes for 10 to 20 seconds. Try making one that will draw attention to your profile.

Points to be considered while writing resumes :

Highlight important details

A well-structured resume draws potential employers’ attention to your skills and experience. This enables them to proceed with the best candidate. Formatting elements such as bold, italics, text colour, and appropriate margin and spacing can be used to make the resume more expressive and strong.

Chronological order

It is standard practice to list your most recent job at the top of your experience section. Experience progresses in chronological order from there. The same rules apply to the section on education qualifications. In one or two lines, we can describe our extracurricular and academic achievements in high school or college.

Be Specific

More importantly, a resume should tell employers what we bring to the table, not just with our skills and experience. For example, if you’re leaving a software development role at a company, instead of simply stating that you were a “high performer in the organization or was good in programming,” in your resume, try to express your accomplishments in more qualitative and quantifiable ways, such as “created a web app used by 250K+users with daily traffic of 10K.” Employers will be able to understand the value you bring to the company in measurable terms as a result of it.

Match yourself to the position

A good resume matches your skills to the requirements of the position. One way to accomplish this is to ensure that our resume contains the same keywords as those found in the job description. For example, if the job description requests “knowledge of JSON,” include “JSON” on your resume. Employers or ATS (Applicant Tracking System) will be able to filter what qualifies you for the position if you do this.

Templating

Avoid using brightly coloured, photo-heavy resumes; instead, use white or offwhite backgrounds. One must include their professional contact information so that a recruiter can contact them. Mentioning our email, GitHub, and LinkedIn profile is a must and the most important detail to have included. Clean, clear fonts like Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, and Helvetica work well on these templates with appropriate text sizes.

Active words

Focus on active language and removing unnecessary words to keep your resume concise. Instead of saying, “I received the controller achievement within five years of working for the company,” say, “Achieved controller within five years.” This will not only help keep your resume brief, but it will also stand out more to a hiring manager who may not spend much time reading each resume.

Role Vs Resume

Depending on the job role we are applying for, we can create a copy of our resume and mould it according to the job description and our previous experience in that field of work.

That’s all for week 4. Have fun learning!🎓
